What we repair
- Decking and handrails, a few boards or the whole run
- Pilings with rot or marine borer damage
- Gangways, ramps and hinges
- Floating docks that sit low, lean or have broken loose
- Pierhead roofs
- Boat lifts that won't come up or won't sit level
Repair or rebuild: what the rules say
- Normal repair. If the dock's still generally intact and working, it can be fixed back to its original size. SCDES wants a repair request with a copy of your old permit and photos.
- Making it bigger? Anything that adds square footage, like a bigger pierhead, a new float or a lift, needs a permit amendment or a new permit.
- Destroyed in a storm. A permitted dock that's destroyed can go back to its previous layout, as long as the rebuild is done within five years of the storm.
- After a declared emergency. SCDES can issue emergency permits to put permitted docks back at their previous size and spot.
- Emergency repairs. Call before emergency work so the paperwork is right.
After a storm
Before anything gets moved, take photos of the whole dock: walkway, pierhead, float and pilings. You'll want them for the repair request and for your insurance. Then call (854) 205-2740.
